PROGRESS ON THE PATH: WHAT MAKES AN ADVANCED PRACTICE?

How do we measure the efficacy of our yoga practice? What keeps us coming back? What draws us to seek out the practice in the first place?

There are endless benefits to practicing yoga, and progress will look different in everyone. For some, it looks measurable or physical like an increase in mobility, or a decrease in muscling through, or poses that were pipe-dreams become available.

Since yoga isn’t just about the physical aspect, progress and advancement may also come in the form of heightened awareness of the value of life, or a new way of viewing yourself in the world, or greater self acceptance, or even expressions of kindness and compassion toward others.

While “advanced yoga” often conjures images of bendy poses, balancing inversions, or meditating for hours, and a general belief that more is better, what if we approach it through the lens of finding depth in the basics? Truth is, the more complicated the pose, the more refined at the basics a practitioner is, so the advanced yogi is always a beginner!

Our two hour all levels workshop will focus on developing a deeper level of self inquiry and appreciation of subtlety through progressive technique, refined alignment principles, and finding balance between strong effort and softness. Expect a mixed asana practice, including backbends and inversions, with a few tricks and challenges along the way!

We’ll break down the basics in this workshop an students will come away with:

- A refined understanding of foundational poses and their benefits

- Clearer understanding of what “next level” means individually

- An ability to recognize where to strengthen, and where to soften

- Improved awareness for recognizing one’s own proclivities for movement and structural limits
